CitySprint solves the 'Environmentally friendly courier' dilemma

February 2008

CitySprint, the UK’s largest privately owned SameDay Courier business, has introduced an efficient and environmentally friendly service targeted at businesses in Canary Wharf and the City. The newly launched service, CentralExpress, offers an environmentally friendly solution to businesses within the area, without compromising speed or efficiency.

Traditionally, courier companies have faced real challenges in providing and maintaining SameDay Courier service levels to businesses situated in Canary Wharf. Resources in the E14 postcode have simply not been as readily available as they are within the City of London. The availability of environmentally friendly delivery options, such as bicycle couriers, has also been limited due to the distance between Canary Wharf and the City. This has been exacerbated by the main artery that connects the two areas, ‘Limehouse Link’, being inaccessible to bicycles.

Environmental awareness is of major concern to businesses within the UK, particularly those of the size and stature located within E14. The lack of environmentally friendly delivery options provided such businesses with a dilemma; how can the carbon usage for courier deliveries be reduced when the services are simply not available?

CitySprint has a comprehensive environmental programme which focuses on working in partnership with its clients. Rather than being prescriptive in its nature CitySprint offers clients a variety of solutions designed to be tailored to their specific needs and objectives. The launch of CentralExpress is testament to this as the service was developed as a result of acknowledging and understanding the client’s dilemma, and actively researching a solution to the issue.

CentralExpress uses CitySprint motorcycle couriers, operating in the E14 area, to collect consignments and perform rapid shuttle runs between E14 and CitySprint’s City based ServiceCentre. As soon as the packages arrive at the Scrutton Street ServiceCentre they are sorted and then distributed via a fleet of bicycle couriers. The system works in reverse for packages going from Central London to E14. Deliveries which fall outside of Central London are delivered by motorcycle courier.

Companies using the CentralExpress service have been able to benefit from improved speed of delivery and cost reductions whilst significantly cutting the carbon emissions of their deliveries.

Patrick Gallagher, Managing Director of CitySprint in London, explains:

“CentralExpress was developed in direct response to significant demand from within the Canary Wharf area. With such a high volume of deliveries emanating from this area we needed to provide a specific and dedicated service solution.

“Also, alongside our multi-award winning environmental programme, we wanted to provide an opportunity to assist our clients in managing their carbon emissions objectives without an increase in cost or a decline in service levels.

“We currently have several leading companies in this area who have really bought into the CentralExpress concept and we hope to expand this further with other like-minded companies.”

CitySprint uses an intelligent dispatch system which enables the minimum number of couriers to undertake the maximum number of jobs; once again saving time and money.

Gallagher continues:

”This investment, in an area that has 95% plus occupancy levels, underlines the tremendous value of CentralExpress and CitySprint’s commitment to offering leading edge, professional courier services.”

The CentralExpress service enhances further CitySprint’s award-winning environmental programme and is made possible by the large volumes of work it undertakes as a market leader.
