A charitable look back at 2016

With the festive season upon us and 2016 coming to a close, many of us will be reflecting back on the events of the last 12 months with mixed emotions.

With the festive season upon us and 2016 coming to a close, many of us will be reflecting back on the events of the last 12 months with mixed emotions. As a nation we have experienced some real highs; celebrating the Queen’s 90th birthday, winning more medals at the Olympics than ever before and the England Rugby team finishing the season unbeaten. Not to mention the fact Andy Murray is the first British Tennis Player to be the world’s number one since computerised rankings began!

There have also been times of uncertainty with monumental changes in our government leadership, Brexit and the Global unsettlement caused by the USA election.

But through it all, I’m proud to say CitySprint has weathered the storm and continued to grow as a business, and put some real focus on our charity commitments. For us, 2016 has really been about giving back to the local communities we pride ourselves on being part of.

In early spring all of our 41 service centres stepped up to the challenge of collecting as many Easter eggs as possible for Charites and food banks. In total, we collected 10,222 chocolate eggs that were donated to a wealth of worthy causes from hospices, to children’s hospitals, care homes, special education schools and homeless shelters. Whilst an Easter egg is a very small gesture, it can make a big difference for someone to receive it and know that people care.

In May, I had the pleasure of attending a charity dinner at the prestigious Merchant Taylors Hall in support of XLP – a truly commendable charity. It was an inspiring night with an impassioned speech about the charity’s aims from its founder, Patrick Regan, and several stories from the young people themselves, sharing their own personal challenges and explaining how XLP has made a difference to their lives. I was so moved by the evening, that on-behalf of the CitySprint family, we also donated £5000 which will enable XLP to support at least five at risk children through their programmes. In the photos of the evening and on the XLP’s website, there are a number of videos about the young people who they have helped, which are definitely worth a watch.

As we began to approach Christmas, the business decided to have one more push on charitable activity by collecting gifts and donations for those in need. Almost half of our 41 service centres opted to purchase a variety of items for CRISIS, who we regularly support at Christmas time by supplying vans that help the CRISIS team deliver food and provide care services to homeless people across the UK. Alongside this, the CitySprint team purchased a selection of food products, toiletries and warm clothing that could be distributed from CRISIS’ national network. All together we collected over 1000 items that I’m sure will be greatly received.

In addition to the CRISIS collections, a number of our service centres opted to buy gifts for the children who will be spending Christmas in Great Ormond Street Hospital. GOSH has been a client of CitySprint Healthcare for many years and means a lot to our entire team. We hope those extra presents will bring at least a small amount of joy to those who need it most.

As we look forward to 2017 with excitement and a sensible degree of apprehension, in the knowledge that more uncertain economic times lay ahead, one thing is for certain. CitySprint will continue to strive to work alongside and support as many charities as possible and make as big of a difference as we can.
