Driving electrification: How CitySprint secured £348k to expand its EV charging infrastructure

16 April 2026

With £348k in government funding through the Depot Charging Scheme, we have installed EV charging infrastructure across 15 service centres, giving our couriers access to affordable, reliable charging and accelerating our move towards a larger zero-emission fleet.

At CitySprint, sustainability is an incredibly important aspect of what we do. That is why we are proud to share a significant milestone in our electrification journey: the successful rollout of EV charging infrastructure across our UK service centre network, supported by £348k in government funding.

In July 2025, the Department for Transport (DfT) launched the Depot Charging Scheme, a government funding programme aimed at accelerating the adoption of zero emission HGVs, vans and coaches.

As charging infrastructure is a key part of our electrification strategy, the electrification project team moved quickly to submit applications. After securing phase one approval in September, we progressed to phase two by November.

In January 2026, we received confirmation that our bid had been successful, and we have been granted £348k for the rollout of EV infrastructure across 17 sites.

With a clear plan and a tight delivery timeline of 31 March 2026 our teams worked side by side with our infrastructure partner, Mer, to bring the programme to life. The electrification team, alongside operations, compliance, finance and our delivery partner, delivered and commissioned charging infrastructure across sites by the end of March.

We now have operational charging infrastructure in place across key locations including Birmingham, Cardiff, Leeds, Newcastle, Sheffield and Warwick

In total, we have installed 18 dual AC charge points and 5 dual 50kW DC rapid chargers, providing colleagues and couriers with accessible, affordable charging at our service centres.

This marks an important step in tackling one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption, access to reliable and cost-effective charging. It also supports our wider ambition to scale electrification across the network and improve fleet utilisation.

Access to depot charging is one of the most practical enablers of a sustainable delivery operation. For CitySprint customers, this investment means:

A growing fleet of electric vehicles available for Same Day and time-critical deliveries

Reduced emissions on the routes that matter to your business

A supply chain partner with the infrastructure, and the ambition, to back up its sustainability commitments

We know that many of our customers have their own sustainability targets to meet and are committed to being a partner that helps them get there.

This programme is the foundation, not the finish line. Following the success of the 2025 to 2026 pilot, the DfT has announced a £170 million multiyear funding programme running from 2026 to 2030 to further expand depot charging across the UK. This presents another strong opportunity for CitySprint, and we are already looking at how we can take part in future funding rounds and extend our coverage.

We will continue to build on this progress as we work towards our goal of transitioning 30% of our fleet to alternative fuel vehicles by 2030. Each charger installed, each site commissioned and each electric vehicle deployed brings us closer to becoming a cleaner, smarter and more future ready logistics provider for our customers and colleagues.
