On 18th February 2014, we were excited to launch the new Addenbrooke’s Hospital Courier Service. This new service, which was launched to the hospital staff at one of our ‘Lunch and Learn’ sessions, was created in partnership with Cambridge University Hospitals as their continuing improvements and cost efficiencies programme to improve the procurement supply chain within the Trust.
Addenbrooke’s Hospital, a world-renowned teaching hospital, is run by Cambridge University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Along with providing emergency, surgical and medical care for local people, the hospital also provides specialist services such as organ transplantation, neurosciences, paediatrics and genetics.
Since 2010, we have worked closely with Addenbrooke’s providing a daily service, collecting blood samples from GP surgeries and delivering to the hospital’s pathology laboratories. We also provide ad-hoc courier services for anything ranging from patient records, medical equipment, patient medication and pharmacy deliveries.
The introduction of the new on-site courier service desk means hospital staff have 24 hour access to help and advice on all their medical courier requirements from our healthcare team. Part of the service also includes an internal runner who will collect the item from staff around the hospital and deliver to the courier desk ready for the courier to collect. The main reason for the new service is to provide a single dedicated contact for all wards and departments, shorten the communication chain and provide a more efficient service and personal response.
A spokesperson for the Trust said that having an on-site courier office has improved the contact and efficiency of the service and on the rare occasion of a problem it can be resolved face to face. More wards and departments are now using the courier service because of the on-site presence.
